Runner Chronicles: Athena de Belder
The Runner Chronicles
How did you get into running and what made you stick to it?
I've always had a passion for running. One of my earliest memories is finishing second in a cross-country race at the age of nine, where the winner was a girl from the athletics team, an accomplishment that made me feel quite proud.
Throughout the years, I ran intermittently, participating in my first official 10K race in 2013 while living in London. However, it wasn't until 2017, when I completed my first half marathon in New York, that I truly began to embrace running consistently. Joining the Running Junkies in 2023 further fueled my dedication, as I started running several times a week, inspired by my fellow crew members.
Are you currently active in a running crew? What does it bring to you?
I run with various crews in Amsterdam, including Running Junkies and Bambas, and I love participating in a wide range of community events. Additionally, I proudly serve as a running ambassador for On, which allows me to connect with fellow ambassadors at races throughout the country. I recently organized my first event with On, a morning run in Amsterdam with 45 runners, which I really loved!

How do you get to the starting line on days when you’re feeling unmotivated?
I just remember how grateful I am that my body is able to do such incredible things. There have been times in my life when I could only dream of going for a run, and now that I can, I cherish every step. Remembering this perspective can turn hesitation into gratitude and inspire you to lace up your shoes and hit the road.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received about running?
It’s easy to get caught up in goals and ambitions, but one piece of advice from my coach at Cadence Runners always sticks with me: the number one goal is to have fun. Before every race, I remind myself that I’m not competing in the Olympics or chasing glory, I’m here for the experience. It’s so important to appreciate how lucky we are to even have the ability to run and participate in these events. So, take it all in, and enjoy the journey!
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
I’m constantly inspired by the runners in my life. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible people who not only find joy in running every day but have also accomplished amazing feats. Every time I open Strava, I’m reminded of their dedication, and it motivates me to go out for a run.
Favorite event or race you accomplished?
This February, I completed a 7K race in Vondelpark on what was likely the rainiest, most miserable day of the year. I nearly hit the snooze button and skipped it, but I’m so glad I didn’t! I smashed my 5K personal best with an average pace of 3:58 for the entire course, finishing in 2nd place among women and 11th overall.
Favorite fuel/ food for running?
Before a long run or race, I always opt for porridge, it’s a staple that never disappoints. During longer runs or races, I enjoy fueling up with Huma gels. They contain only a few natural ingredients and are actually tasty.
If there is any tip you can give our readers, what would that tip be?
I believe your body is capable of far more than you realize. I've surprised myself countless times during races. Embrace the challenge and push your limits, you might just achieve something you could have never dreamed of!
To finish it off, what song is your go to while running?
I can’t quite explain why, but there’s one song I’ve had on repeat during my runs for over a year: J’comprends Pas by PNL. There’s just something about it, it always gets me in the zone.
